1646 is starting VAST-FORWARD, a new program about video art. With this program we aim to reach two goals: in the first place the creation of a national/international network of organizations and in the second place a local archive of video art.

A network
Since the diffusion of digital media, video has become extremely portable, light weight medium suitable for circulation. Nonetheless we see that those works which succeed to circulate internationally are often works by established artists.

Very often the work of newer, interesting artist stays confined to the local or national circuits. For this reason we at 1646 are looking for organizations outside The Netherlands to build a circuit through which we favor the circulation of fresh video works.

In this concern the internet has definitely broadened the range of possibilities but still websites as Youtube or the many v-logs lack the capacity of delivering a full-quality impression of a video work.

An open archive
The outcome of our distribution network is a stable archive at 1646. The archive is a wealth of material out of which we organize monthly screenings of selected works.

In the same way as we succeed to bring the works of international artists to The Netherlands we expect our output (works of artist we put in circulation) to reach audiences abroad at our partner’s venues. We believe the work can travel faster and further than its maker.

The works in the archive, submitted by organizations as well as individual artists, are further accessible for viewing and private screening in our location in The Hague.

Submission conditions
Submitted DVD’s should be in a cover with informations about the work (title, description, technical data) and the artist (c.v., contact informations). Further background texts and informations about the artist are most welcome.

All submitted videos will become part of the archive. For the monthly screenings there will be a selection made by 1646’s VAST-FORWARD committee. Each individual artist will be notified when selected.

All rights of the works belong to the maker of the works. No copies will be allowed without permission of the author. The in-house video archive will not be shared further without consultation with the maker of the work.
