Elementology
Apparently diverse and unrelated in approach, the work by Indiana Audunsdottir, Kolbeinn Hugi Höskuldsson and James Howard seems to wrap around the idea and process of manipulation.
In some odd way, though, such manipulation is hardly ever ultimate transformation of images and ideas: a recombination of elements, rather. And peculiar to the process of the three artists is that those elements somehow manage, individually, always to preserve their original forms and meanings never to be fully transformed into something completely new and different.
That is why, of their final images, we are able to read and spell all the ingredients: recollect what they are, where they come from, where we’ve seen them on our own.
Yet it’s the bigger picture that fails us: unexpected sum of its parts rearranged in the dialectic of a hoax – the unlikely while plausible – the image before us seems to shuffle the cards we had seen laid on the table. Strangely enough what we had just read might be worth trying and reading again.
