1646 is an artists’ initiative/project-space in the centre of The Hague, The Netherlands, which promotes the exchange between local, national and international artists and art spaces, and works as platform for discussion, research, production and presentation of autonomous visual art.
1646 is run by a Netherlands-Based group of practicing visual artists: Nico Feragnoli (Italy), Johan Gustavsson (Sweden), Clara Palli Monguilod (Spain) and Floris Kruidenberg (The Netherlands).

Goals
› Provide invited artists with the physical, economical and critical situation/context to produce, discuss and present new work.
› Create a channel of communication and exchange on international level to and from The Netherlands.
› Bring the public closer to the practice of art and what it involves: process, reflection, experiment, risk taking.

Activities
› Projects on location, for which artists are invited to engage in a project and develop a work context-specific rather than delivering a ready finished plan.
› A residency for foreign artists/curators that offers a maximum of two months working period in the Netherlands.
› ‘Vast-forward’ a video exchange project, which creates an international network of organizations for video material to circulate. It results in a viewable archive of all received material in 1646 location, a monthly screening of selected material in 1646 and further screenings in partner venues.
